Section H: Religious Education

09-14-2026Handbook Highlights

Religious education is an essential part of the academic and spiritual formation of every student at San Francisco de Asís Catholic School. Our students receive regular instruction in the teachings and traditions of the Catholic Church, Sacred Scripture, prayer, and the sacramental life of our faith.

Religious education at SFdA goes beyond Religion class. Our Catholic faith is not simply one subject among many; it is the foundation of who we are and why we exist. Faith is woven throughout the school day, how we pray, celebrate Mass and the sacraments, serve others, resolve conflicts, study the world around us, and recognize the dignity of every person as a child of God.

Faith formation grows with our students. We meet children where they are while inviting them to deepen their relationship with Christ.

  • Preschool-Kindergarten: Children learn that God created and loves them, become familiar with Jesus and Bible stories, learn simple prayers, and begin participating in Mass and the prayer life of our school.
  • Grades 1-2: Students deepen their understanding of prayer, Scripture, Jesus, and the Church. They begin more intentional sacramental preparation, and in Grade 2, students may celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
  • Grades 3-5: Students grow in their understanding of Scripture, the Mass, the sacraments, the commandments, virtues, saints, and Catholic traditions. They also learn how faith calls us to serve others and make faithful choices. In Grade 3, students who are prepared receive the Sacraments of First Holy Communion and Confirmation.
  • Grades 6-8: Students are challenged to think more deeply about Scripture and Catholic teaching, develop well-formed consciences, understand human dignity and Catholic social teaching, grow in moral decision-making, and consider how Christ calls them to live as disciples in the world.

Our goal is for students to know about the Catholic faith, but also to know Jesus Christ and understand what it means to follow Him. As students mature, we want them to develop the knowledge, habits, virtues, and spiritual foundation that will help them approach increasingly complex questions and situations through the lens of their Catholic faith.

Parents are their children’s first and primary educators in the faith, and our school is honored to support families in this sacred responsibility. When home, parish, and school work together, children learn that faith is not limited to Sundays or religion class, it is a way of life.

At San Francisco de Asís Catholic School, we are forming minds, hearts, and souls. It is our hope, that through solid faith formation, our students will come to know Christ, love Christ, and have the courage to follow Him.
